SPSS stands for Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. SPSS is a powerful statistical application package that is particularly useful for the analysis of data allowing it to be used to analyze data from various disciplines. It is general statistical software tailored to the needs of social scientists and the general public. Compared to other software, it is more intuitive and easier to learn; the trade-off is less flexibility and fewer options in advanced statistics than some other statistical software like S-Plus, R and SAS. SPSS is good for organizing and analyzing data. You can rearrange data, calculate new data and conduct a variety of statistical analyses. Theoretically, there is no limit to the size of data files, so we can work on large data files in SPSS when you cannot do so in Excel. This version also allows easy input/output management, such as exchanging files with other software, changing the appearance of output, or cutting and pasting into different programs. For example, SPSS now allows the input of Excel data files. The best way to learn how to use SPSS is to work with it. Even if you don’t have particular data of interest, SPSS provides a wide variety of data that you can play around with. The online tutorial under the Help menu provides an opportunity to quickly go over basic features of SPSS. SPSS is installed on every computer in CSSCR.

The course will consist of an introduction to basic statistical ideas, and the step by step process of data analysis using SPSS. The course is mainly designed for those who need to analyze data as part of their work or as the basis for their education or research.

This customized training program is to be facilitated by an independent contractor which combines the standard training offered by SPSS with custom modules for their business function.  The unique feature of the training is that staff members will only need to attend those sessions where they are deemed to be deficient.

Ø  Students with a basic level of proficiency will be able to use SPSS after completing the training courses to utilize data procedures to manipulate data.

Ø  Students with an intermediate proficiency level will be able to independently decide the most appropriate statistical method to use when conducting analysis and summarize findings for questions that allow for multiple responses.

Ø  Students will be able to aggregate data across variables, transform data in order to screen data and export and customize output for professional reports.

Ø  Enabling Objectives

Ø  Students will learn the procedures using SPSS to objectively determine whether sample results support a statistically significant difference in the value found for the variable and the value that might be expected from the population.

Ø  Students will learn how to use SPSS to make relative comparisons between population means and percentages.

Ø  Students will describe and document the procedures used to arrive at a statistical decision.

Ø  Students will learn the characteristics of both measures of central tendency and measures of dispersion.

Ø  Students will calculate the minimum sample size needed for a project to fulfill accuracy and reliability requirements for the population being studied.

Ø  Students will specify data validation rules for  individual variables and response sequences on surveys.

Ø  Students will be able to independently manipulate data through the recode procedure, as well as data found in string expressions and date format.



In order to achieve the goals and objectives, the facilitator will use a multimedia PowerPoint presentation, group discussion, group work, projects on database etc. to lead the learners in improving their skills at analyzing and manipulating data using SPSS.

Instructional Strategies

Staff members have varying levels of proficiency with SPSS.  Staff members will spend from 1-

4 days in training with a live instructor guiding the project.

o   Instructor will explain concepts from slide show

o   Learners will be instructed to open data file which will be used for all modules

o   Instructor will lead learners through hands-on exercise

o   Project based learning and assessment

Learning Theory: Behaviorist & Cognitive Constructivist

 The overall project is based on the constructivist theory of students learn by doing.  Behavioral principles such as positive reinforcement, corrective feedback, spaced practice to guide learners are also present. The constructivist emphasis is on anchored instruction.  New knowledge in the training will be connected to prior knowledge throughout the tutorial by the use of the same data file. This leads to common examples of new knowledge.  The data file will be a representative data file from the client’s actual work.
